About How Timeshares Work
An independent, informational guide to timeshares. We explain how they work, what they cost, and what to watch out for. We sell nothing and take no money from any timeshare company.
How Timeshares Work (howtimeshareworks.com) is an independent, informational guide to timeshares. We explain how timeshares work, what they really cost, the risks and pitfalls to watch for, how to get out of a contract, and how to recognize the scams that target owners. We sell nothing, we take no money from any timeshare developer, resort, exchange company, or exit service, and we are not affiliated with any of them. Standard display ads help cover our costs, but no advertiser has any say in what we write.
Why does this site exist?
Most timeshare information online is written by someone who wants to sell you something. Developers and resorts want you to buy. So-called exit companies want you to pay thousands of dollars to leave. Both sides have a financial reason to shade the facts. We built this site to be the neutral middle: a place where you can learn what a timeshare is, what it costs over time, and what your rights are, without a sales pitch attached.
Who is this site for?
This site is for anyone trying to understand timeshares with clear eyes. That includes people considering a purchase who want to know the true cost before they sign, current owners weighing whether to keep or exit, and families dealing with an inherited timeshare or a high-pressure exit offer. Whatever brought you here, our goal is the same: give you accurate, plainly written information so you can make your own decision.
How do we research and write our content?
Timeshares touch your money and your legal rights, so we hold our content to a strict standard:
- Authoritative sources first. For facts about costs, contracts, cancellation rights, and scams, we rely on primary and government sources such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), state attorneys general, and published industry data, rather than on marketing material.
- Current and dated. Figures, statutes, and enforcement actions are checked against current sources and stamped with the year, so you can see how recent they are. We do not carry old numbers forward without rechecking them.
- Neutral, not promotional. We describe both the benefits and the drawbacks of timeshares. We neither promote them nor attack them. Where the facts are genuinely uncertain or vary by state, we say so.
- Plainly written. We write in plain language and explain the jargon, because you should not need a lawyer or a salesperson to understand your own contract.
Is the information on this site professional advice?
No. How Timeshares Work is an educational resource, not a law firm, financial adviser, or timeshare exit company. Nothing on this site is legal, financial, or tax advice, and reading it does not create any professional relationship. Timeshare contracts and state laws vary, and your situation may differ from the general case we describe. For advice about your specific contract or circumstances, consult a qualified attorney or financial professional licensed in your state.
How can you contact us?
If you have a question, a correction, or feedback about the site, email us at [email protected]. We read every message, though we cannot give advice about individual timeshare contracts.
